Summary

SCR 156 requests the development the Delaware Department of Education to create a group that creates an updated curriculum for comprehensive sex ed in public schools.

Analysis

While SCR 156 claims to develop a Comprehensive Health Education, the reality is that by ‘health’, this resolution focuses solely on sex and sexuality. The original drafted version of the resolution specifically named organizations that would be included in this group. The organizations mentioned included Future of Sex Education (FoSE), Sexuality Information and Educational Council of the United States (SIECUS), and Advocates for Youth and Answer.

These organizations have current curriculum and education standards that are far more explicit than the average adult is aware of or would be comfortable with their child taking part in. It is not merely about explaining the reproductive system, basic human anatomy, and sexual infection and disease. Rather, this sex education is very purposeful in its presentation of being ‘comprehensive‘. Comprehensive educational systems seek to have students understand all or almost all elements, aspects, or details of a subject. In this case, the subject is sex. More specifically, sexuality, not merely reproduction.

This ‘comprehensive sex ed’ has lesson plans for children as young as kindergarten, exposing them to material that is psychologically detrimental to their innocence and proper development.

The organizations listed on the original draft bring great concern. SIECUS, for example, before the 4th grade would have students:

  • Give explanations of self-pleasure and masturbation (Kindergarten)
  • Give explanations of various kinds of sexual intercourse (2nd Grade)
  • Give explanations of ‘erotic fantasies’ (3rd Grade)

Historically, sex ed begins to be presented to students somewhere in the middle school years, between 6th-8th grade. Having sex ed standards for K-12, it usurps the authority of the home to have such sensitive conversations within the timing that parents deem appropriate.

SCR 156 seeks to teach every aspect of sexuality to children that still have bed times!

This resolution must be heavily opposed as it is a direct attack against the innocence of children and the right of parents to steward their children in such sensitive conversations.
