You are part of the experiment.
This is an experiment most of you were born into. Some of you joined it later in life.
So far, the experiment has been successful overall. But it’s been running for two and a half centuries, and one major threat can cripple this entire project.
Of course, the experiment I’m referring to is our country, the United States of America.
Think about it. Most countries are formed by ethnic connections, geography, or borders imposed on it by an outside force.
The United States is unique. It was formed by a group of individuals who banded together under a set of ideas.
Were these individuals perfect? Far from it. But overall, their ideas have allowed people from all over the world, for generations, to grow this experiment from a ragtag band of revolutionaries into a superpower on the world stage.
It’s an experiment, because countries aren’t usually formed this way. But it has worked. So far.
What threatens the experiment? It’s not the economy, political infighting, or the war in Iran, though these things are important.
No, the problem is more foundational. It’s the inability to reason, and to recognize truth from falsehood.
An enlightened people will never suffer what was established for their security to be perverted to an act of tyranny.
The current generation of young adults – Gen Z – is notorious for lacking critical thinking skills. And the trend is getting worse. In Delaware public schools, only 41% are proficient in reading, prompting the Delaware Department of Education to declare a “literacy crisis.”
This widespread lack of critical thinking leaves the door wide open for dangerous ideologies to destroy the ideas that made this experiment successful.
What’s the solution? Advancing truth.
This is why we invest in training the rising generation of leaders through Delaware Leadership Congress. This yearly program is for young adults ages 16-25. These young adults debate complex issues at Legislative Hall in Dover, to learn how to communicate effectively, lead with integrity, and analyze cultural ideas from a biblical worldview.
In other words, they learn how to be enlightened citizens.
